Leucadia is part of Encinitas but boasts a different mind set, combining both a coastal community as well as a rural feel! Homes differ from some funky beach cottages to new upscale homes most being custom designs versus large planned communities. The population varies from surfers to many professionals preferring the rural feeling of Olivenhain. The beaches are world renown for the caliber of the “surf” and Beacons Beach and Swamis even have their own web sites with fabulous photos of Leucadian sunsets.

Neptune Avenue parallels the coastline and is a popular street for walking, running, skating and just enjoying California beach living! The feeling of Old San Diego is prevalent in Leucadia with many of the streets not having sidewalks and adding to the beach cottage feeling much preferred by many home owners. Many of the older homes are being torn down with new constructed custom homes taking their place- adding to the value of new beach construction. Ocean Views are common in this coastal community. There are very little commercial developments although a few restaurants, businesses, and surf shops are scattered throughout coast highway, which complete this eclectic community. Going east you enter the community of Olivenhain (or Olive Grove) which turns into acres of rural horse properties and beautiful country homes offering yet another aspect of Leucadia/Encinitas living!

Leucadia was founded in 1885 by British immigrants, but many of the names such as Hygeia, Jupiter, Vulcan and Plato were inspired by Greek mythology. At one time most of Leucadia was covered with Avocado trees, greenhouses and flowers which to the residents chagrin are being replaced by houses. As one of 4 communities within the City of Encinitas incorporated together in 1986, Leucadia retains a special feel and character which even with its “remodeling” has never lost its unique charm!
